There’s SNO cars like our cars for track and street

The crew of Bonnie, the world’s fastest Alfa, gathers on the lawn at Concorso Italiano in 2005. This car has run just a hair under 233 mph at Bonneville.

: Max Banks and his brother Andrew in the pit garages at Spa. On this day they finished 8th in the Spa Six Hours.

: The Banks brothers qualified their GTA replica 26th in this race, but stormed through the pack of 91 cars to win the Eau Rouge Trophy and finish 8th overall.

: We pleased to report that the SNO stickers seen on the corners of the Alfaholics GTA replica appear to have given Andrew and Max Banks the winning edge. They may claim careful preparation and driver skill, but we know the truth.

: This 302 Ford fits neatly in the engine compartment of James Romeo’s 1971 Spider. James, whose last name really is like that of the car, lives in southern California, where many hot sports cars originate.

: This is what you get when the Alfaholics warehouse of parts is at your disposal. Mods to this car include suspension, brakes, limited slip differential, exhaust, aluminum GTA radiator, 7×15 Strada GTA-style wheels, and a wonderful 168 hp 2 litre motor running on 40 DCOEs. Do you wonder why I keep asking Richard if he’ll adopt me? I want the keys to his warehouse.

: This is a real GTA motor. It is complemented by GTA running gear.

: A serious distributor for a serious race GTA motor.

: Gordon bought the car new. He writes: “I set it up when I was at AUSCA with Horst Kwech and Ron Neal, mid and late 1960’s.” Kwech and Neal were known for their racing successes as proprieters of Australian CA racing, or AUSCA, which was located not in Australia, but Illinois.

: Under the hood of Jay’s ’66 is a 2L motor that looks as good as the rest of the car. His car has a hydraulic clutch, ATE brakes, “flying buttress” seats, and numerous other mods.

: The 1963 Spider of Jay Mackro has bored liners and 1750 pistons, giving it 1650cc; Webers with Weiand air filters (an appropriate speed shop addition for a SoCal hot rod); late model tranny; and more.

: Bob Hoye’s Spider has a 2L motor with 10.4:1 compression ratio, modified head with 7L cams and DCOE 45 Webers.

: Finland’s Pekka Rossi gave this motor a modified cylinder head, higher compression pistons, new cams, and other mods.

A newly restored Sprint Speciale joins a growing collection of Italian beauties in Richard’s garage

: Richard Lane’s SS shown about ready for paint. This work was done by Bill and Don Gillham, at Hooligan Racing, in Oregon.

: Once painted and ready for reassembly, the SS was trailered from Oregon to California. It’s shown arriving in Richard’s hilly neighborhood on the edge of Silicon Valley, on a frame strapped to a car hauler.

: Inching the SS off the trailer was a nerve-wracking experience.

: The SS and its perfect Bluette paint had to be maneuvered up a steep, winding drive to reach Richard’s garage.

: With the car safely in his garage, Richard began to reassemble it.

: The Sprint Speciale’s stripped out interior was rewired and reassembled. Richard, an electrical engineer, is good at wiring, and at adding relays in places Alfa should have put them. Could be why he has a nickname among some of us, right “Relay?”

: Richard designed and built his own engine stand to test the SS motor before it went into the car.

: The rebuilt motor is shown poised above the expensive paint job. It makes my palms sweat just to look at this.

: Friend and fellow foundingMember of SNO, Steve Smith, guides the SS motor into place.

: Richard says attaching all the new hoses was quite the challenge, but we can see that it all came out looking great.

: Nearing the finish line. This is one beautiful SS.

: Richard at the wheel, making vroom, vroom noises and trying to decide if he’ll trust his perfectly restored SS to the crazies who drive the mountain roads and freeways in his part of northern California.

: Richard’s choice of color was inspired. It really sets off the lines of the SS.

: Did anyone notice we’re drooling over a car that is ORIGINALE? We like perfect restorations as well as the next guy.

: On the left is the ’67 GTV that was Richard’s first restoration. It has a high performance 2-litre engine, among other mods.

: Next came this Giulia Super, which he both painted himself and did all the mechanical work.

It’s a Lotus. It’s an Alfa! No, it’s Wil Caron’s highly original, thoroughly non-originale use of 1978 Alfetta bits and pieces.

: Wil Caron’s unique car is made of steel tubing & sheet alloy. It has inboard front coilovers, some original rear suspension, carbs,and shortened one-piece propshaft.

: This 1350-pound Alfa-engined Alfus (?), Lofa (?), Alfa Romus (?) is a delight to look at and sounds like a lot of fun to drive. Apparently folks like Wil Caron, who live on islands in British Columbia,find some really great ways to spend their time.

: Speaking of great ways to spend time, here’s George Schweikle’s 1976 Spider. AlfaBB readers will recognize “Conedriver’s” very fast autocrosser.

: This is Robert Bobardt’s modified 1973 GTV 2000, which also lives in Germany. Changes are found in the car’s cylinder head, fuel pump, ignition, pistons, suspension, exhaust, seats, and front grill. In other words, it’s Scuderia Non Originale through and through.

: This is a true SNOmobile. Scott Potter’s Alfa shivers through a cold day in Fredericksburg, Texas.

More fine Spiders and hard tops
for your viewing pleasure

This 1967 Duetto just looks right, doesn’t it? It belongs to Rod McNae, who lives on the scenic Whidbey Island, Washington. Having enjoyed the island several times in my GTV, I can’t imagine a finer place for top down cruising.

: Rod’s Duetto is an attention getter. I realize some people like seeing skinny little tires on these cars, as were original, but I love how the fatter wheels and tires look on this car.

: Bob Mouck, of Texas, (lokki on AlfaBB) writes that his 1971 Spider was “in pretty sad condition” when he bought it. Only one caliper worked, it had dirty, faded white velour upholstry and green shag carpet. He’s now worked on the entire car and it shows. I like the earlier bumpers and lowered stance of the car, named “Lola.” As Bob notes, “What Lola wants, Lola gets.”

: Alex Jordan, from Berkeley, California owns this 1974 GTV.

: Alex painted his engine compartment black, realizing that in doing so SNO may be the only car club that will now accept him. Don’t worry Alex, you don’t need another car club … unless, of course, you want tours, meetings, newsletters, dues, and all that sort of stuff.

: Bob Hoye’s gorgeous 101 “Spider Abnormale” lives in vancouver, British Columbia.

: Bob’s Spider wears a decal for the Monte Shelton Northwest Classic Rally.

: Bob Hoye’s Spider has a 2L motor with 10.4:1 compression ratio, modified head with 7L cams and DCOE 45 Webers.

: Sandor (Alex) Csank’s GTV6, like Alex, has at least two names: Tramontana (North wind in Italian) and Monty (as in “Python” or “full”). I kinda like the flexibility in the name department, as you know if you’ve found me on Facebook.

: Nice juxtaposition of logos, which Sandor says generate a lot of questions.

: Alex Csank’s fine looking Milano is known as “Trogdor.” Note that it sports a SNO sticker for that all important extra kick when being chased by the Originale Police. Trogdor has a Milano Verde 3.0L motor with 164S cams, Euro custom exhaust (no cat), BMW AFM and “all kinds of cool suspension tweaks.”

: Australian Luke Wreyford gives us a look at his very nice 1981 Alfetta.

: Luke Wreyford’s Alfetta has a hopped up 2L with performance cams and a modified cylinder head, larger exhaust system, and more.

: How can anyone look at a Giulietta Spider and not fall in love? This one, belonging to Jon Burningham of California (and those of other SNO members) has me longing for my first Alfa, a 1959 Giulietta Spider.

: Jon writes that his Giulietta Spider has a “warm+ 1750 engine with aluminum flywheel.” The head is by Richard Jemison. Weber DCOE 40’s were tuned by Gordon Raymond to match the head. There’s also an aluminum flywheel.

: Washington’s Wes Greydanus has a fleet of fine project cars, not to mention a wonderful view of Gig Harbor. He says he cars include: “…two future Vivo Verde Spiders and a running ’66 Dueto formerly owned by Ted Bluechel, then my brother Lee, a saxophonist in a ’70’s rock group that never went bigtime. Now the car is owned by little old me.”

: The 1963 Spider of Jay Mackro has bored liners and 1750 pistons, giving it 1650cc; Webers with Weiand air filters (an appropriate speed shop addition for a SoCal hot rod); late model tranny; and more.

: Glenn Ackermann’s ’86 Graduate is a San Francisco Bay Area car. He says on a good day he can cruise the nearby wine country and pretend he’s in Tuscany or Umbria.

: I expect this will be debated, but Glenn writes about the virtues of California wines: “Actually, the wine is generally better here (than in certain well-known regions of Italy), but that’s a whole ‘nother issue …”

: Ron Taylor, from Australia, shares photos of his cars, including this 1986 Spider, which the factory sent to Australia to be converted to right-hand drive. Ron writes: “All the injection stuff is gone, wiring harness, computers, etc. Interestingly, two things are possible with this change. You can retain the injection head with a small modification, and use a Euro 105 inlet manifold. These are things I was told I couldn’t do. Of course the computer ignition goes too, so I replaced that with a Bosch electronic setup.

: Ron writes that he replaced the original Spider fan with an electric unit mounted behind the radiator. He tried front-mounting the fan and found that it just didn’t provide adequate cooling.

: Hey, why’s that steering wheel on the wrong side? Because Ron Taylor lives in Australia. and that’s how they do it there.

: This is the Spider of Rolf Skala, from Vancouver, British Columbia. When last heard from Rolf was threatening to put a SNO sticker on his single racing scull, which he rows out of Vancouver Rowing Club. We’d like to see that, but no photo has arrived so far. : Active Oregon Alfa Clubber, Roger Dilts belongs to this1972 Spider.

: Roger Dilts’ Spider used to belong to Oregon racer Denny Pillar. Not surprising, then, to find that the car has Dellorto 45s, Euro cams, high compression pistons, headers, Rugh springs, Bilstein shocks, Carello light covers, Panasports, and a bright Corvette yellow paint.

: Roger’s car is a beauty. We had a lot of time to admire it while following closely behind on a couple of Oregon Alfa Club tours.

: The pristine Alfa 75 of the Rev. Graham Middleton, pastoring in Barrie, Ontario, when he sent this photo. It’s definitely the most cool ministerial car I’ve seen in my 60+ years of church involvement. Rev on Rev!

: Robert Landman writes: “I do hate red Alfas.” Because this is SNO, and WE love GTs, we welcome him anyway. Robert has several GT’s, including this 1968 1300 Jr. he bought in Holland.

An AUSCA Spider and a whole lot more

Gordon Raymond’s 1965 AUSCA Spider goes nose to nose with his Ferrari 275 GTB (See more about the 275 GTB on the Ferrari page).

: Gordon Raymond’s Alfa began life as a 1965 Spider Veloce.

: Gordon bought the car new. He writes: “I set it up when I was at AUSCA with Horst Kwech and Ron Neal, mid and late 1960’s.” Kwech and Neal were known for their racing successes as proprieters of Australian CA racing, or AUSCA, which was located not in Australia, but Illinois.

: This is a real GTA motor. It is complemented by GTA running gear.

: A serious distributor for a serious race GTA motor.

: Gordon says this perfect-looking machine has never been restored, yet it’s not a garage queen. Well done, Gordon!

: The Originale Police will have to be content to find that Gordon’s car has a stock looking interior.

: GTA side exhaust and period wheels lend a nice finishing touch to Gordon’s Spider. If it weren’t for the GTA engine and running gear, and these Mini-Lite wheels, this Spider Veloce would be originale. I don’t care. I want one just like it!

: Lee Hayes, of Brisbane, Australia, races “The Banana” with a stock engine, but is planning a 1L for it. Yep, I thought that was a typo, too.

: Lee Hayes explains that the plan is to replace the Alfa engine with a 3 cyl Suzuki Swift (Geo) engine as a base, that he can turbocharge. He says, “We have a turbo multiplication here of 1.7, so to stay under 2.0 litres in class, I can use a maximum of 1176cc.” Any purists looking in must feel pureed about now.

: Brian Shorey sent this photo of the 2009 class-winning Milano LeMons racer with this explanation: “Andy Kress and I, two SNO officers, were looking at the most recent modification of our 24 hours of LeMonds car (suspension actuated pizza box wings) and Andy made the comment that if any car was worthy of SNO status, this is it.” We agree. interesting car and nice win in Connecticut.

: Ed DeMayo’s gorgeous Alfa began life as a 1967 GTV, then morphed into a GTA look-alike during restoration. We love it!

: Can’t get enough of Ed DeMayo’s GTA look-alike.

: If FANTAGTA means “fantasy GTA,” this is a nice fantasy to have.

: Ed DeMayo’s white 1962 Spider has a 1750 engine with Dellortos and a 5-speed. He writes: “My wife’s favorite mods are seat heaters, temp/air controls mounted under the dash and a factory hard top.” Ed is also restoring a ’62 Giulietta Sprint Coupe.

: Aaron Wyeth, of Brisbane, Australia, has a highly modified Alfa 90. While we don’t have pictures of his 90, he did send this of his “project car.” It’s a 1966 GTV with 1750 engine and later dash. Aaron says it wasn’t registered until late 1968. “Guy I got it from has known the car for 25 years,” writes Aaron, “and it has always been that way. Plus have registration documents back to 1980 with current 1750 engine number.” Making the story even more interesting, the car was stored under a house for 10 years. Does that make this a basement find, instead of a barn find? No matter, this car is a winner.

: David Raab, from Malvern, Pennsylvania, sent this photo of his 1966 GTV. All I can say is Wow!

: Jesse DaSilva’s 1987 Spider Quadrifoglio may look stock, but it’s not. When Jesse tells us what he’s changed, we’ll update you.

: Mike Charlsson emailed this from Switzerland: “Because I finally got my Giulia Nuova Super 1300 on the street this summer, I think it’s time to join .. and while the car may look like it did when leaving the factory in 1977, I have to admit that some parts are ‘non-originale.'”

: The blue of Mike’s car looks different here than in the other photo. It’s the same car in different light. No matter, we like both blues.

: Domenico Dadino, from Blackpool in the U.K. owns this Spider, which gets it fuel through a pair of Dellorto 45s.

: Domenico’s Giulia started life as a Giulia Super Nuova. It has a 2L motor with 10.5mm cams, bigger bore Alfaholics exhaust,and lowered suspension. The color is Rosso Maranello Metalizato, from a modern Alfa Giulietta. It looks great!

: This is a restoration project being done by Terry Rushbrook.

: Larry Jones, of San Francisco and Viet Nam (No kidding!), sold his super green Super a while ago. It’s still Super in our eyes.

Tom Sahines’ historic racer and a whole lot more

: “My 1959 Giulietta Veloce has been a race car since the early 1960’s,” says Tom Sahines. “It was raced by many California East Bay notables, such as Griswold, Norman, Woodner, Brown, and Anderson.”

: In 1977, John Anderson drove the Giulietta Veloce now owned by Tom to the SCCA G Production national champioinship. This is a beautiful, well prepped car, as one expects of anything in Tom’s ownership. The color difference between this photo and the others is probably due to global warming. It couldn’t be my photo editing skills.

: We’re always honored to welcome residents of Italy to SNO. It’s the country responsible for our auto addictions. One such member is Fabio, who hails from Vicenza. This is his 2002 Sportwagen 156, with 2.5 liter V6. Fabio reports that the wagen handles great and has a lively 24-valve motor.

: Fabio’s immaculate black 1986 Alfa 75 has a 1.8 liter turbo. It’s the first of the Turbo 75 models, without America-type bumpers. This car has a Garrett turbo, chip tuning, custom exhaust, lower and stiffer springs, sports shocks, and custom wheels.

: I’m especially partial to Fabio’s gray GTV6. It’s a 2.5 liter 1983 car, restored in 2002. Fabio says it’s also his favorite. He uses it for track days.

: Chuck Lipper’s 1965 GTV comes with a great story. It was originally purchased by Frank Howell, a Lockheed employee working overseas. Frank bought the car after driving from Istanbul to Frankfurt in his VW Karman Ghia. He was tired of being stuck in the slow lanes, so the need for speed led him to Alfa. In the photo are Frank Howell (right) and Chuck’s brother, on the day Chuck bought the car in Atlanta, Georgia.

: This picture shows Frank’s wife Hazel with the Alfa on the Spanish Riviera, in November 1965. The car was about two weeks old. The couple was enroute from Frankfurt to London, via Pisa, Monaco, Barcelona and Paris. What a great way to break in a new car.

: Chuck and Cindi Lipper celebrate the changing of the Alfa’s ownership with Frank and Hazel Howell. From left to right are Hazel, Chuck, Frank, Cindi.

: Bob Hoye takes his modified Spider around the track. It has a Richard Jemison cylinder head and cams, close-ratio gear box, 4.11 LSD rear end, carbon-fiber-coated clutch plates, heavier sway bar, and Koni Classic Red dampers.

: Evan Bottcher powers around an ess curve in his Alfasud Ti during a club track day at Winton, in Australia. Evan’s 1977 Alfa is a stripped out racer, with 1500cc engine (originally 1200), rollcage, race suspension, race brakes, and more.

: Ken Lee, fron Ontario, Canada, and his GTV, a 1973 car named “Blanche.”

: Ken’s 1974 GT named “Ruby.” Both GTs are shown taking laps at Mosport.

: Ray Gulson, Australian auto racer, car dealer, and all-round enthusiast, bought this lovely 1964 Alfa Giulia GT race car at the end of 2009. He immediately took it to Oran Park Raceway for some fun.

: The 1973 GTV of Eldridge Moses, Stellenbosch, South Africa, is much modified. It has a ported and gas-flowed head, 11.2mm cams, and high compression pistons. It rides on 17-inch rims with 20mm offset. The car has a dealer-fitted fabric folding roof and recent leather interior. The Weber carbs have 25mm ram tubes in K&N filters. Exhaust is through a 50mm (2 inch) free-flow exhaust system.

: This wonderful 1968 Duetto belongs to Steve Crowley (aka: Santa). Gotta say that I’m a big fan of slightly lowered Spiders with fat tires and plex headlight covers. Oh, and did I mention it has a GTA driveline?

: Robert Kirkpatrick’s 1968 1750 GTV. “As you can see,” writes Robert, “it is in original concours condition, and needs nothing.” Hmmm.

: This Alfa 75 (Milano) has a 3.0 V6. and has been totally restored. It belongs to Fausto, who lives in Italy and is a friend of Fabio, also a one-named SNO member.

: Fausto also owns this pretty Alfa, a 156 3.2 V6 GTA Sportwagon.
